After the Alexander McQueen exhibit comes Prada and Schiaparelli's! After visiting the new high-fashion exhibit come visit BIS!

Are you in NYC? Or planning to come visit sometime before mid-August? If you haven’t already, go check out the Met’s Spring 2012 Costume Institute exhibition, Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Here’s BIS crew’s thought on it: “After the long awaited wait in the hall, we found ourselves in a room full of beautiful dresses, skirts, jackets tailored more than twenty years ago- that could Very easily be worn today.”

Best of all? BIS girls noticed that a lot of the dresses and coats displayed in the exhibitions were hanging at the BIS racks first!

**If you’re going to see the exhibit, swing by our store on the way back: we are located only two block from the Met!**

Good thing we’re already here! Thirteen years ahead of the trend–

When Marni launched a collection for H&M, we couldn’t help but make a post out of it -

The same thing goes for Lanvin – I cannot recall the number of times I had to specify that “this dress” or “this necklace” is “not for H&M”. Truth is, it is very hard to distinguish between a “real” Lanvin (pardon the expression for I am lacking words to describe what is not an H&M piece) and a fast-fashion item signed Lanvin.

Sellers find it increasingly difficult to explain to customers that Lanvin from Lanvin and Lanvin from H&M are different and thus do not hold the same value.

Which brings me to the question again: What has partnering with fast-fashion corporations done to couture and high-end labels? Was it a good strategy to reach a new market or has it only blurred the brand names?

Little tip when it comes to resale stores: you can tell the difference between a Lanvin necklace and a Lanvin for H&M necklace by looking at the logo. “Real” Lanvin will have “Lanvin – Paris – Made in France” embossed on it

Yours Truly,

BIS

Jackie Kennedy, still dictates style today: and we approve. Between the role of jewelry, personal taste vs the norm, and the new use of watches.

Our favorite lady and inspiration Jackie Kennedy who is said to have started luxury resale in the UES has once again appeared in the news. In this Wall Street Journal article the first lady is mentioned as supporting the motto: “It is not what you wear but how you wear it.” The article digs into the topic of jewelry and the mixing of cheap with expensive; real and fake but also interestingly mentions the new role watches have taken for women. With all the new ways one can look at the time, watches have become yet another “piece of jewelry”. For the full article click here, in the meantime here are bits and pieces to get you started:

“There are few levels on which JKO was more influential than in the wearing of jewelry.” “Perhaps Jackie’s greatest genius was her ability to mix fake jewelry and the real stuff with aplomb.”

[...]

“You no longer need a watch for telling the time; that can be done for you in so many other ways. If you are a woman, you should treat your watch more like a bracelet and purchase accordingly.” In other words, a timepiece is now just another piece of jewelry.”

Paisley will be the new black this Spring and Summer! And we believe Etro has mastered the print years ago. How will you be incorporating Paisley into your outfit?

Elle UK said it first, and we couldn’t agree more! (http://www.elleuk.com/fashion/what-to-wear/paisley-prints)

Whether it’s printed on silk pants, a scarf, shirt, collar, sneakers, or a canvas bag– PAISLEY will be the new black this Spring and Summer–

Seen it on the runway at Jil Sander and Stella McCartney and already on the street, at BIS we have it too! We believe ETRO is a master when it comes to Paisley, nailing down the pattern years ago.

What is Paisley? Originally from India or Persia, it is said to symbolize life and eternity. The drop-like flower patterns are meant to represent the mango fruit or mango seeds. Once a royal pattern used to adorn crowns and garments in some Asian countries it trickled down to Europe and France more than 200 years ago. So much exoticism this Spring/Summer!

What makes Marni - "Marni"? We're skeptical.

The new Marni for H&M collection sold out in…was it a day?

And that’s not all – we heard people are going back for more, hoping to catch a few items being returned: http://www.mizhattan.com/2012/03/designer-collab-marni-finds.html

Designer names collaborating with fast-fashion companies is becoming a trend, and we’re interested – but skeptical. As items on online marketplaces are starting to blend between pieces from high-end names creating affordable lines – and “the real thing” at affordable prices; a thought has started to sprout: what makes Marni – Marni?

As the avid high-end fashion lovers that we are, browsing through the Marni – H&M collab we enjoyed the beautiful colors and prints, floral and geometric patterns of the swimwear, RTW and jewelry, very “Marni”.

But here’s the question: does it equal the exquisite Marni dresses and sweaters we have at our store made of intricate fabrics ranging from cotton to viscose to silk? Or the statement necklaces mixing exotic materials: wood, ivory, bone and more?

So, what will it be: Marni for H&M or Marni @ BIS?

What we have in common is.... Two things you should know about BIS

Saint Patrick’s Day is JUST around the corner, good thing our store is already dressed up for the event!

If you’re in NYC, don’t miss out on the Parade, we heard it’s going to be better than Halloween.

If you’re wondering what we have in common with the commemoration of one of the most commonly recognized patron saints of Ireland, here are a two things you should know about BIS:

1. Wearing green and having a feast? This is one of our mottoes: “Food & Fashion.” Food lovers, fashion lovers: you can be confident that our selection of pieces will always be both tasteful and in great condition.

2. BIS is Green. And no, I’m not referring to our logo or the walls of our store, but to our very concept. BIS gives a second life to clothes. Fighting against fast fashion and preventing unnecessary waste: we make our consignors happy by making more space in their closets, we make our buyers happy by offering them some of the most desirable designer merchandise at a reachable price, and we keep the environment happy- just by being. For us, recycling, not to be confused with down-cycling is about enabling clothes that were worn once or twice, if not Never, to be someone else’s new treasure.

What’s your fashion footprint?
